Tracey Hartley : The fat story

I weighed over 200 pounds (214) in Dec. of 1999. I had very low self esteem, seemed to stay depressed and did not go out of the house very often. I had a very negative outlook on life, stayed moody and was watching my marriage go down the drain.

Tracy Hartley December 1999 Tracy Hartley August 2001

I knew that no one was going to change my life but me. So I joined a gym
to try and lose a little off the middle. I began training with a lady who
competed in body building shows. We would always talk about her competitions
and she told me that she thought I would do well in a fitness competition,
if I could get my body weight down. I promised her that if she would help me
to get to my ideal weight I would then train for a competition.
This goal of losing weight became a challenge and I love a challenge. I
was going to the gym five days a week; doing at least 30 minutes of cardio a
day and weight training 3 times a week. This became a hobby that not only I
loved but helped me mentally and physically. It got me out of the house,
helped me to relieve stress, helped to lose weight while toning up and
building muscle and boosted my self esteem. I began reading everything I
could find on nutrition. I believe that learning knowledge of what ones body
reacts to, and water is the key to success. I found that a high protein and
low carbohydrate diet worked for me.

In August of 2001 I hit my ideal weight. I told my trainer that I was
ready to keep the promise and train for a competition. She suggested that I
do a show to get my feet wet, so I would know what to expect when competing
the next summer. I found a show that was to be held in Orlando FL, It was
the Women's Tri-fitness. I went into the show not knowing what to expect or
what I was even really doing. I made up a routine consisting of tumbling,
flexibility and strength moves. I meet a lot of wonderful girls and learned
more than I dreamed of knowing about body manipulation.

AL (Rosen), the producer of the show talked me into tiring the fitness skill. I had a blast and ended up second in my age group and 10th overall for the fitness America regional. This meant I qualified for nationals. I debated on even going because I did not think I could be competitive with girls like Tina Ridgon, Venus Ramos or Ocean Bloom. Finally I realized that it was a chance of a life time and I should go for the experience and the fun of competing in Las Vegas at the Ms.Fitness America Nationals. I once again learned more than I could
imagine and met a lot of awesome girls. Now after getting a little
experience and going in to the show at 101 pounds lighter than two years
before, I know I can do anything I set my mind to. I hope to continue to
be able to compete as a hobby. I would like to become some sort of model and help motivate anyone with a weight problem to start today to tone up, lose weight and become healthy. If one puts it off until tomorrow, tomorrow will never come and it only pushes the goal back another day!

My husband, Jimmy, said: "I think my wife's self esteem has raised
tremendously. I believe that her success in her weight loss and the dedication
to her new hobby has helped to give her a better attitude and outlook on
life.''Thanks to everyone who has helped and gave me the extra boost to make my dreams come true!
