THE HEPTATHLON

According to Denise Lewis, the 2000 Olympic gold medallist, "no women's event in the world is tougher than the heptathlon. That's because it's not one event, but seven!"

The heptathlon, or sometimes better known as the "women's version of the decathlon," is a seven event, two-day discipline that is the ultimate test of strength, determination and endurance. It encompasses the basic elements in which all sports are fashioned after: running, jumping and throwing.

So what are those seven events that require the need to maintain focus and concentration for two straight days? Day one starts with the 100-meter hurdles then to the High Jump, after that comes the Shot Put and then day one closes with the 200-meter sprint. The Long Jump starts day two followed by the Javelin throw and then the ultimate gut-checker to finish everything: the 800-meters.

As can be concluded from this list of events, it takes not a sprinter, a thrower nor a distance runner to be a successful heptathlete, but all three. A heptathlete is a rare breed of athlete, one who is cut from a different cloth. In the heptathlon, it is not necessarily your opponents that you race against; it is a universal scoring table that posts your biggest challenge. More points are awarded for faster, higher or farther performances. One heptathlete may be a better sprinter and another a great long-jumper, but it is the athlete that is most consistent through all seven events that will come out on top.

There are many components that make up a great heptathlete: smart training, diet, rest and of course, genetics. Do we see a pattern here with the Tri-fitness? Are the tri-fit gals going to let the heptathletes of the world think they have something on them? Wasn't it "The Rock" that said the Tri-Fitness was the Ultimate Women's Sports Challenge?

So this is what happens to a heptathlete who finishes her career. She goes into something even more challenging! Walking in stilettos!
