OVERCOMING
OBSTACLES
By Janis Holland
Almost
everyday for the last 5 years, hundreds of fit women have come
to learn how to conquer the obstacle course. The most important
thing Al Rosen relates is the Obstacle Course is about overcoming
and conquering obstacles and challenges. "The challenges
are within themselves. Although the WTF obstacle course consists
of 10 foot wall, running grid, monkey bars, 15 foot cargo net,
hurdles, etc., the real obstacle is the "Obstacle of Life."
The "Obstacle of Life" is accepting the challenges and
attacking and conquering each. Challenges might be physical, mental,
emotional, medical or possibly all of the above. The most important
thing is to stay POSITIVE and surround oneself with POSITIVE PEOPLE,"
states Rosen.

Lindsey, Stephanie, Jennifer, Al Rosen
If
anyone should know about obstacles it is the Trifitman, Al Rosen.
Coach/Promoter/Teacher/Businessman/Dad Al is the proud father
of 3 daughters, Stephanie, Jennifer, and Lindsey. At an early
age, Stephanie and Jennifer Rosen showed extreme talent in the
sport of gymnastics. Stephanie, by the age of 7, was already competing
in USA sanctioned events. Jennifer, following in the older sisters
footsteps, began competing at the age of 5. Both girls eventually
went on the win state and national titles.
On
September 22, 1987, the third daughter, Lindsey was born. She
did not have a sufficient airway to breathe, thus was trached
(tube in her neck) a few days after birth. The doctors in Tampa
related she would have the trach for life. "Not so,"
said the dad who has battled with some of the biggest and toughest
in his professional wrestling days. "Rosen says one thing
he learned is there is no such thing as always and never."
With the help and guidance of his brother Jeff Rosen, M.D., Rosen
sought the most knowledgeable physicians in the world or as he
stated, "I wanted the World Champions."
"Sometimes you have to travel a bit to get the championship
- heck, Mohammed Ali, went all the way to Zaire to get the title.
Well, Boston Children's Hospital and Philadelphia Children's Hospitals
are much closer then Africa. The gurus of the world, the medical
champions of the universe, the masters of pediatric vocal cords
were in the northeast and Lindsey Rosen was going to see the best,"
rambles Rosen in his New York accent.

Rosen, Lindsey, Dr. Wetmore

The
physicians who would perform numerous operations and oversea Lindsey's
medical care would be Dr. Gerald Healy (Boston) and Dr. Ralph Wetmore
(Philadelphia). August 15, 1994, Lindsey Rosen had the trach removed
and was breathing on her own. Dr. Wetmore said she might be limited
in some athletic ventures and stated she will never be a marathon
runner, which was fine with the Rosen's.
Approximately,
six months later, a friend of Rosen's, Eric Truvillion (former
football player) said his company, New England Life, was sponsoring
a Children's Gasparilla Run in downtown Tampa. It was a run covering
half mile. Lindsey said she wanted to attempt it. Despite having
the trach, Lindsey had been taking dance and gymnastic lessons
so she was in good physical shape. Yes, she conquered the run
despite being a little huffy at the end.
Next
challenge was the martial arts. She got involved in karate with
two of the dad's friends Gus and Luis Lugo. The Lugo brothers
saw a lot of desire, physical ability and a lot of heart. Within
two years, she went on to win the Florida State championship in
weapons and fighting. Dave Skylar, founder of USA Kick remembers
the championship fight when Rosen was up against a girl two heads
taller. "She attacked and got out; her kicks were followed
by punches and she had a fierce desire in her eyes," Skylar
remembers.

Today, Lindsey Rosen is an accomplished dancer. She excels in
ballet, toe, lyrical, jazz, tap, and hip hop. She can throw a
back handspring, roundhouse kick and go over the WTF 10 foot wall
on the obstacle course. Her voice is raspy and she still has a
scar on her neck. With the help of champion doctors, the support
of positive family members, friends and coaches, Lindsey overcame
many obstacles and is a "champion" today.
